VIC: Victorian crime on rise: union
Victoria's police union says leaked internal figures show the state's crime rate has risen
by nearly four per cent.
Figures released by the state's Police Association show a 3.7 per cent increase in the
overall crime rate, compared to a 0.3 per cent decrease reported by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics in June.
Association assistant secretary PAUL MULLETT says the figures also show almost a doubling
of aggravated burglaries, a 15 per cent increase in robberies and a nine per cent increase in
assaults.
He says the figures show the crime rate is trending up, particularly in crimes against the
person.
A spokesman for the Victoria Police says the figures used by Mr MULLETT are preliminary,
prepared for internal use to plan crime strategies and are not the annual financial year
figures due for release at the end of the week.
