NSW: Olympic boxing official sues for defamation
SYDNEY, Aug 6 AAP - An Olympic boxing official is suing the publishers of The Sydney
Morning Herald newspaper and an author, claiming they defamed him by implying he was a
murderer and a member of the Russian mafia.
Gafur Rakhimov, a boxing official from Uzbekistan, has sued in the NSW Supreme Court
John Fairfax Publications and Andrew Jennings over three articles published last year
in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics.
Mr Rakhimov claims two articles published on July 15, 2000, headlined "Russian mobsters
coming to games" and "Fraud of the rings", and another printed 11 days later headlined
"Efforts to stop mafia may prove fruitless" defamed him.
He claims the articles also implied he was prepared to influence the results of Olympic
events and while at the Atlanta Games had positioned himself to take control of international
amateur boxing so he could use its share of Games profits for criminal purposes.
The trial is continuing.
