Fed: States agree to gun laws = 3
Victorian Premier Steve Bracks said the decision would cut the number of hand gunsin Australia by at least 20 per cent.
"It is an important step for the nation and also a very important decision for Victoria,"
he said.
South Australian Premier Mike Rann said one of the biggest problems in relation tohand guns was the growth in outlawed motorcycle gangs.
Mr Howard said the amnesty would run from July 1, 2003 to July 1, 2004.
He said the buy-back would cost a lot but refused to commit to an amount.
"I'm not going to, at this stage, commit myself to a precise figure," he said.
